By eight in the morning the roads out of Oranmore tell the story of the place. The N6 queue into Galway starts at the roundabouts, the station car park is filling with people for the train into Ceannt, and traffic for Limerick and Dublin is peeling off onto the motorways. Oranmore was a village at the head of the bay with a castle at the water’s edge, and in thirty years it has become a town of estates for people who work in the city, in Parkmore, at the Galway Clinic and across the county. Main Street is still short and still has its pubs and shops, but the trade is a commuter town’s trade. Website design in Oranmore is for those businesses, and we do it from Dublin: a video call or phone call to begin, WhatsApp for everything after, a site built from photos and details you send rather than from a visit, and no office in Oranmore or Galway.
The H91 problem
Oranmore shares the H91 routing key with Galway city, Barna, Moycullen and a wide area around the bay, and that causes a particular problem on Google. A searcher who types ‘electrician Oranmore’ is shown a map of results from the whole city, and a business that is in Oranmore but describes itself as Galway disappears into them. The fix is plain: Oranmore in the page title, the first line and the structured data, the Google Business Profile pinned to the right place, photos that were taken here, and the neighbouring places (Maree, Rinville, Clarinbridge, Claregalway, Doughiska, Roscam) named in sentences. Our guide on getting your business on Google Maps explains what moves the pin.
New houses, new kitchens
An estate is a stream of work for the trades. In the first few years the houses need floors upgraded, blinds and curtains, a kitchen that was the developer’s choice replaced, a shed, a patio, lights in the garden. The people ordering that work are the people on the N6 at eight, and they do it from the phone in the evening: ‘kitchen fitter Oranmore’, ‘blinds Galway east’, ‘flooring near us’. A page with a gallery of your own jobs, a from price where you can give one and a form that lands on your WhatsApp gets the enquiry while the competitor on Facebook is waiting for a message request to be noticed.
Takeaways, trainers and the WhatsApp group
The estate WhatsApp groups and the parents’ groups at the schools are where Oranmore recommends. Somebody asks for a childminder, a takeaway that delivers, a personal trainer or a dog groomer, the names are given, and then each name is searched. If yours appears with a photo, a number and real hours, you get the message; if it appears as an unclaimed listing with one old review, you do not. Claiming and setting up that listing is part of every site we build, and the reason why is in our guide on what local SEO is.
The village that is still there
Under the estates Oranmore is still a village, with the castle, the bay, Renville Park and a Main Street where the pubs do food and the GAA club is the centre of the weekend. The pubs, the cafes and the small shops there are found by visitors on the way to Clarinbridge for the oysters or to the coast, and by the new neighbours who do not know them yet. A page with hours, a menu and the right pin is how a place that has been there for decades gets introduced to the family that arrived last month.
