For one week in October Ballinasloe fills past the brim, with horses on the Fair Green and in the streets, the pubs on Main Street and Society Street busy from morning, beds hard to find for miles, and people in from all over Ireland and beyond. For the rest of the year it is a steady east Galway market town on the Suck: Portiuncula Hospital is the big employer, the train runs to Galway and Dublin, the mart and the farms around keep the hardware shops and garages going, and Athlone is close enough across the Shannon to compete for the shopping. Website design in Ballinasloe has to work for both versions of the town. We are based in Dublin and work with Ballinasloe businesses remotely, by video call and WhatsApp, building the site from the photos and details you send.
Fair week
The fair brings people who have never been here before and need everything at once: a bed, a meal, a chipper at midnight, a taxi back to a guesthouse in Ahascragh, a farrier, a vet, a pharmacy that is open. They find all of it on their phones, searching ‘B&B Ballinasloe’, ‘taxi Ballinasloe’ and ‘food near Fair Green’, and the businesses that appear with hours, a number and a few photos take the trade. For a guesthouse or a holiday let, fair week is when a booking and a deposit taken on your own site matter most, because the no-show in October costs more than a no-show in any other month. Our guide on taking deposits online in Ireland covers the fair terms.
The rest of the year
Outside the fair, the customers are the town and its hinterland: Ahascragh, Aughrim, Kilconnell, Laurencetown, Eyrecourt, Clontuskert, and across the river into Roscommon. Hospital staff on shifts search for food, a barber or a childminder at odd hours. Farmers search for a contractor, a tyre or a part from the field. Patients’ families staying a few days search for somewhere to eat and somewhere to sleep. All of those searches reward a listing that is correct and a page that loads fast on a phone with poor signal.
The horse trade is not one week either. Stables, riding schools, farriers, feed suppliers and horsebox hire around Ballinasloe work all year, and most of them run on a Facebook page and a reputation. A page that says what you do, where you are and how to book a lesson or a shoeing is what the newcomer who moved here for the hospital finds when she searches.
Where Google puts you
Ballinasloe’s routing key is H53 and the address should carry it, matched to the Google Business Profile. The town sits on the county line, with part of it over the Suck in Roscommon, so a business should say plainly which side it is on and name the places it serves on both. Athlone is a short drive east and its retail parks are the competition for a Main Street shop; the shop’s advantage is being findable by someone already in Ballinasloe with a question, and that is what a correct listing and a plain page do.
AI tools are starting to answer questions like ‘where can we stay in Ballinasloe during the fair’ directly, from websites and Google listings. We set up the structured data and the question and answer content they read, and the background is in our guide on what AI search is and why it matters for a local business.
