Roscommon is a county that does its shopping in other counties’ towns. The south goes to Athlone, whose west bank, Monksland and all, is Roscommon ground. The north goes to Sligo and to Carrick-on-Shannon, where Cortober on the Roscommon side is part of the town. The west around Ballaghaderreen looks over the border into Mayo, and the middle, Strokestown, Elphin and Tulsk, looks to Roscommon town and Boyle and across the Shannon to Longford. The county itself is sheep and suckler cattle on small farms, the Suck valley in the west, the Shannon and Lough Ree down the east side, Lough Key above Boyle, and a scatter of villages. Website design in County Roscommon is mostly for the farms, the trades around them and the visitor businesses on the water. We do it from Dublin, with no office in the county. The first chat is a video or phone call, your photos and details come by WhatsApp, and the site is built from them.
A county that shops in other counties’ towns
That pull outward matters for a business here. A fencing contractor in Athleague is competing on Google with Athlone and Ballinasloe crews as much as with anyone in Roscommon. A septic tank service in Elphin serves Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford as much as Boyle. A B&B at Lecarrow on Lough Ree gets guests who think they are staying in Athlone. The site has to name the real neighbours, in whatever county they are, because that is what the customer types: “fencing Athlone”, “septic tank Carrick-on-Shannon”, “B&B Lough Ree”. A page that says “serving all of Roscommon” is shown to nobody searching for any of those.
Marts, sheep and the trades that follow them
Roscommon is sheep country first, with a breed named after it, and suckler cows after that, and the week still turns on the marts at Roscommon, Castlerea and Elphin. The businesses around that farming, agricultural contractors, machinery repair, vets with a large animal round, fencing crews, septic tank services, well drillers, firewood and fuel suppliers, tree surgeons, are run from the yard with a Facebook page and a mobile. Everyone they work for already has the number.
The people who do not are the ones who moved in: a Dublin family in a bungalow outside Strokestown with a septic tank for the first time, a retired couple in a cottage near Knockcroghery, the nephew taking over the farm who grew up in Galway. They search, and they search by the nearest town. A plain page with what you do, where you go and real photos is all they need to find, and what local SEO actually is explains why that works.
Lough Key, Strokestown and the Shannon shore
Roscommon’s visitors come for the water and the big houses. Lough Key Forest Park outside Boyle and King House in the town, Strokestown Park and the Famine Museum, Rathcroghan at Tulsk, the Arigna mines, the cruisers tying up at Roosky, Lecarrow and Hodson Bay. They are people who know nobody, searching from the car park for a cafe, a bed, a pub with food, a taxi. The B&B or the pub that states its village, its hours and its distance from the lake in plain words is the one they find.
Name every town, and the Eircode
Roscommon town is F42 and Boyle is F52, while Monksland shares Athlone’s N37, which shows how little the county line means. Your own Eircode goes on the contact page and in the structured data. The towns do the rest: Roscommon, Boyle, Castlerea, Ballaghaderreen, Strokestown, Elphin, Athlone, each in a sentence about the work you do there, with the same list as the service area on the Google Business Profile. Setting that up is in how to set up a Google Business Profile in Ireland.
