Nobody opens a hardware shop’s website for the pleasure of it. They arrive with a job half finished: a tap that will not stop, a shelf that needs the right fixing for a plasterboard wall, a gas bottle that ran out on a Sunday with the dinner half cooked. What they search is “hardware shop near me open now”, “key cutting” with the name of the area, “paint mixing”, “gas bottle refill”, or just the name of the thing they need. Websites for hardware shops in Dublin win by answering “do you do that, and are you open” faster than the next shop.
You cannot list every screw, so list the departments
A full stock list would be out of date by the afternoon and nobody would read it. What people need is the shape of the shop: plumbing, electrical, paint, timber and sheet materials, ironmongery, tools, garden, fuel, cleaning, maybe pet and wild bird feed. Then a sentence under each with the brands you carry and the things people ring about.
The services deserve more than a mention, because each one is a search on its own. Key cutting, and whether that includes car keys. Paint mixing, and which brands you can tint. Glass cutting. Timber cut to size. Mower and blade sharpening. Gas bottle exchange. Trailer or tool hire. Deliveries of compost, bales, briquettes and coal, with the area you cover.
Every one of those is a line on the page and a service on your Google listing, and the reasoning is in what local SEO actually is if you want the longer version.
Bank holiday Monday
The whole country decides to paint the hall on the same wet bank holiday Monday, and half of them check whether you are open before they put their shoes on. Hours on Google have to be right for the day itself, set in advance, with the early trade opening if you do one, the Sunday hours, and the Christmas week. You can change them yourself on the private edit page, or text us and it is done.
Storm weeks are the other test. When the warnings go out, people search for sandbags, torches, batteries, tarpaulins and generators, and a “we have these in stock” line on the page, written that morning from your phone, is worth more than any advertisement. The same strip carries the seasons: compost and seed potatoes in spring, fuel and draught excluders in autumn, lights and tree stands in December.
Trade customers and the counter
The trade comes early, wants an account, and wants to send a photo of a fitting and be told “yes, we have it” without a conversation. The WhatsApp button and the enquiry form on the site do that, and the account details and the opening time for the trade get their own short section.
Photograph the counter staff. In a hardware shop, the knowledge behind the counter is the product, and a picture of the person who will tell you which wall plug you need is the best thing on the page. Then the shelves, the yard, the key machine, the paint mixer and the van if you deliver.
The questions the counter answers all day
“Do you cut keys for cars?” “Can you match a colour from a lid?” “Do you take back the empty bottle?” “Do you deliver bales to Lucan?” Write ten of those down with your honest answers and they go on the page as questions and answers. That is what Google shows under your listing, what the AI tools read when someone asks them where to get a key cut nearby, and what stops the same ten calls a day. Garden centres share a lot of this ground, and if you serve several towns, the area pages show how we handle that.
To get started
- Your hours, including Sunday, bank holidays and the early trade opening if there is one.
- The departments, and the brands under each that people ask for by name.
- The services list: what you cut, mix, sharpen, fill and hire.
- Your delivery area and how you charge for it.
- How a trade account is opened.
- A dozen photos, taken on a quiet morning with the lights on.
Twenty minutes in the shop covers the rest, and we come to you.
Plan, and shops outside Dublin
Essentials at €499 to set up and €50 a month suits most hardware shops. Complete at €1,499 and €100 is there for a bigger shop that wants the Google listing posting the week’s offers and a chat box answering stock questions on a Sunday. The details are on the pricing page. If the shop is outside Dublin, the first chat is by phone or video call and everything after that works the same way.
